For 1995/96 the Commission proposes that the basic price remain at the level already decided for 1994/95. PIGMEAT Over the years the basic price has been allowed to deviate considerably from its intended level and it has thereby become operationally irrelevant. It is therefore appropriate to propose a significant reduction in the basic price to bring it back to its original purpose of indicating the proper point of market balance. Such a reduction in the basic price does not entail any reduction in market prices, because of its limited function.

On the recommendation of Mr Karel Van Miert, the Member of the Commission for Consumer Policy, the Commission has adopted: - a draft Council Directive(1) setting out minimum rules to safeguard the protection of consumers in contracts negotiated at a distance for the provision of goods and services, - a draft Commission recommendation on codes of practice for the various communication techniques employed.
