There the west failed to reach out to the reformist movement that attracted overwhelming support from the populace. Instead of supporting this movement by opening channels to the country and helping the process to evolve, the United States placed Iran on its so-called axis of evil list, thereby isolating Iran and rallying popular support for the conservative mullahs in power.
