The overall objectives of the joint research programme are fourfold. 1. to enable scientists to improve their understanding of the health and environmental impact of radioactive contamination and how it can be reduced; 2. to assist those people in the three republics responsible for evaluating and mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident; 3. to help the governments concerned formulate a rational policy response to the disaster; and 4. to help alleviate the suffering of people directly affected by the accident.
