In line with the objectives pursued by the Financial Services Action Plan (FSAP), this Directive aims to consolidate the existing measures concerning the conditions for admission of securities to official stock-exchange listing and the financial information that listed companies must make available to investors.

It is not mandatory for a stock exchange to establish an official segment. If a stock exchange decides to create an official segment, securities and issuers that want their securities to be admitted to this official segment must meet the criteria established in accordance with the Directive 2001/34/EC on the admission of securities to official stock exchange listing.
