The Centre/North region of Italy has a modern economy, a population more or less the same as that of Spain and a per capita GDP (on the basis of equal purchasing power) which, on average, exceeds that of the richest countries such as France or Germany with a very low level of unemployment. The south of the country, with a population twice that of Belgium, has a per capita GDP lower than that of Spain and high structural unemployment.
