Beim Anteil der Forscher/innen an der gesamten Erwerbsbevölkerung hinkt die EU immer noch nach: 6 von 100, im Vergleich zu 9 in den USA und 11 in Japan.[5] Die wissensbasierte Wirtschaft braucht Menschen mit der richtigen Mischung von Qualifikationen: bereichsübergreifende Kompetenzen, digitale Kompetenzen, Kreativität und Flexibilität sowie fundierte Kenntnisse im Fach ihrer Wahl (z. B. Naturwissenschaften, Technik oder Mathematik).
While 35% of all jobs in the EU will require high-level qualifications by 2020[4], only 26% of the workforce currently has a higher education qualification. The EU still lags behind in the share of researchers in the total labour force: 6 per 100, compared to 9 in the US and 11 in Japan.[5] The knowledge economy needs people with the right mix of skills : transversal competences, e-skills for the digital era, creativity and flexibility and a solid understanding of their chosen field (such as in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
