Environmental degradation in Egypt was estimated to cost between €2.7 and €5.1 billion per year (or 3.2-6.4% of GDP), €1.5 billion per year (or 3.6% of GDP) in Algeria and €1.2 billion per year (or 3.7% of GDP) in Morocco.[4] Clearly, if the health of the region's people, and their economic and social development, are to be protected, inaction is not an option.
