Owing to their geographical position in the Caribbean, the northern edge of South America, the eastern Atlantic in the vicinity of the African coast, and the Indian Ocean, the outermost regions are situated close to third countries tied to the European Union by association agreements (e.g. ACP, Morocco, Mexico, South Africa) or independent preferential arrangements (e.g. Latin America).
Durch ihre geographische Lage in der Karibik, im Norden Südamerikas, im Osten des Atlantischen Ozeans und an der afrikanischen Küste bzw. im indischen Ozean liegen die Regionen in äußerster Randlage in der Nähe von Drittländern, die durch Assoziierungsabkommen mit der Europäischen Union verbunden sind (beispielsweise AKP, Marokko, Mexiko, Südafrika) oder in den Genuß autonomer Präferenzregelungen kommen.
