In this framework, the revised legislative proposal builds on: a) the technical work of the Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA) completed in 2006 for existing nuclear installations, with the participation of all European nuclear safety regulators; b) the principle that only strong and independent regulators can ensure the continued safe operation of the nuclear power plants in the EU; c) enshrining in the Comm ...[+++]unity legislation the principles of the main international instruments available, namely the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS)[2], concluded under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the safety work carried out by the IAEA[3].

The Association Council welcomed the commitment of the Slovak government to close the two VVR 440-230 reactors at Bohunice nuclear power plant in, at the latest, 2006 and 2008 respectively and looked forward to the adoption and implementation of the decommissioning plan which will allow for further donor contributions to the International Bohunice Decommissioning Support Fund.
