Jean Echenoz, a French author, won the European Prize for Literature for his book "Lac", published in 1989 by the Editions de Minuit. The English translator, Michael Hamburger, was awarded the European Prize for his translation of the works of the great German poet, Paul Celan, published by the Anvil Press in 1988.
