I was also here for what were, at times, hypocritical questions from the Member States pointing out Europe’s shortcomings: well, what is Europe doing, then? It is Europe’s fault that there is such a lack of foresight, it is Europe’s fault that ships are allowed to sail in such a state, and it is Europe’s fault that there are no guidelines on how to compensate for the ecological disasters that have resulted from this. Well, it will not be the fault of Europe, but of the Member States, that we are getting to the end of the exercise to which we are summoned today.
Ich habe auch die zuweilen heuchlerischen Schuldzuweisungen der Mitgliedstaaten erlebt, die das Versagen Europas zum Gegenstand hatten: „Was unternimmt Europa denn?“ „Europa ist schuld, wenn es soviel Kurzsichtigkeit gibt, Europa ist schuld, wenn Schiffe in diesem Zustand zur See fahren können, Europa ist schuld, wenn es keine Leitlinien für die Entschädigung der sich daraus ergebenden Umweltkatastrophen gibt.“ Nun denn, wenn wir die Aufgabe, die wir uns heute gestellt haben, zu Ende bringen, dann wird künftig nicht Europa, sondern die Mitgliedstaaten werden schuld sein.
