The lake hosts numerous threatened, endemic and rare habitats, species and breeding, wintering or staging birds (e.g. the squacco heron Ardeola ralloides, white-tailed eagle Heliaetus albicilla, and the pygmy cormorant Phalacrocorax pygmeus) and is a Natura 2000 site protected under the EU Birds and Habitats Directives.
Im Gebiet des Sees gibt es zahlreiche gefährdete, endemische und seltene Lebensräume und Arten, vor allem Vögel, die dort brüten, überwintern oder rasten (z. B. Rallenreiher Ardeola ralloides, Seeadler Haliaeetus albicilla und Zwergscharbe Phalacrocorx pygmeus). Er ist ein Natura-2000-Gebiet, das durch die EU-Vogelschutz- und die EU-Habitatrichtlinie geschützt ist.
