Reiterates the importance of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), as a new citizens’ right introduced by the Lisbon Treaty which aims at increasing participatory democracy in the EU; notes the importance of the ECI as a powerful tool providing European citizens with a direct democratic right to contribute to the decision-making process of the EU, in addition to European citizens’ right to submit petitions to the European Parliament (EP) and their right of appeal to the European Ombudsman;
172. bekräftigt die Bedeutung der Europäischen Bürgerinitiative (EBI), die als neues Bürgerrecht im Vertrag von Lissabon eingeführt wurde und zum Ziel hat, die partizipatorische Demokratie in der EU zu stärken; weist auf die Bedeutung der EBI als wirksames Werkzeug hin, das den europäischen Bürgern ein Recht der direkten Demokratie an die Hand gibt, einen Beitrag zum Entscheidungsfindungsprozess der EU zu leisten, und zwar zusätzlich zu dem Recht der europäischen Bürger, beim Europäischen Parlament Petitionen einzureichen, und ihrem Recht, sich mit einer Beschwerde an den Europäischen Bürgerbeauftragten zu wenden;
