Dieser Text ist noch heute allgemein bekannt, zeigt er doch die ganze Absurdität politischer Eingriffe in die Wirtschaft. Am 14. November 2008 verabschiedete die Europäische Kommission eine reale Petition von Kerzenherstellern, und zwar keine satirische Fiktion im Stile Bastiats, sondern eine 66-prozentige Steuer auf Kerzenimporte aus China.

It was also claimed that it would be relatively easy to discern decorative candles from other types of candles, such as tea lights and tapered candles, taking into account that decorative candles have at least one of the following features: (i) are multicoloured and have multiple layers; (ii) have special shapes; (iii) have carved surface with decorations and (iv) have additional decorations of material other than wax/paraffin.

Weiter wurde vorgebracht, es sei relativ einfach, Zierkerzen von anderen Kerzentypen, wie Teelichten oder Spitzkerzen zu unterscheiden, da Zierkerzen wenigstens eines der folgenden Merkmale aufwiesen: 1. sie seien mehrfarbig und bestünden aus mehreren Schichten, 2. sie hätten eine besondere Form, 3. sie hätten eine verzierte, geschnitzte Oberfläche und 4. sie hätten zusätzliche Dekorelemente aus anderem Material als Wachs/Paraffin.

Concerning the claim made on the use of certain candles types, namely to produce light and/or heat, it is recalled that in recital 26 of the provisional Regulation it was mentioned that interchangeability between various types of candles existed and that candles were largely used for interior decoration purposes and not for the main purpose of producing heat.
