It is partly, though, a result of the rush into biofuels: the EU proposal of a 10% increase in fuel for transport; in America, the 30% of corn crops now going into ethanol, reducing the land available for food and pushing up the price of cornflour.
Zum Teil ist diese Entwicklung aber auch auf die übereilte Hinwendung zu Biokraftstoffen zurückzuführen: Dazu zählt der Vorschlag der EU, den Anteil der Biokraftstoffe im Verkehrssektor auf 10 % zu erhöhen. In den USA werden inzwischen 30 % der Maisernte zu Äthanol verarbeitet, was die Anbaufläche für Lebensmittel verringert und den Preis für Maismehl in die Höhe treibt.
