It will also have to satisfy as many as possible of the norms laid down by the Commission in its description of a standard building, in particular as regards fire prevention, air conditioning and ventilation. The building should house the Commissioners and their staff (bearing in mind that the accession of new Member States by 2000 may well mean an increase in the number of Commissioners), the Secretariat-General, the Legal Service, the Spokesman's Service, the Protocol Department and the Security Office.
Es muß, insbesondere hinsichtich Brandschutz, Klimatisierung und Belüftung die sicherheitstechnischen Normen, die die Kommission in ihrem Dokument "Immeuble-type" (Standardgebäude) festgehalten hat, in größtmöglichem Maße erfüllen. Die Kommission legt großen Wert darauf, daß der Symbolcharakter des Berlaymont-Gebäudes gewahrt bleibt, dabei aber optimale Funktionalität gewährleistet wird.
