Cetacean by-catches are of course not the only reason for the decline in cetacean stocks in some geographical regions: environmental effects (for instance, shipping, emissions of noise, vibrations and electro-magnetic fields, and the direct dumping of various substances hazardous to cetaceans) and climatic conditions (such as the icing up of the Baltic) certainly contribute.
Walbeifänge sind allerdings nicht die einzige Ursache für den Rückgang von Walbeständen in bestimmten geographischen Gebieten: Umwelteinwirkungen (zum Beispiel Schiffsverkehr; Emissionen von Schall, Vibrationen und elektromagnetischen Feldern; direkte Einträge verschiedener für Kleinwale gefährlicher Stoffe) und klimatische Bedingungen (zum Beispiel Vereisung der Ostsee) tragen dazu sicherlich auch bei.
