Die Forschung im Bereich der Mobil- und Drahtloskommunikation muss sich zwangsläufig mit der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette auseinandersetzen, von der technologischen Entwicklung (Funkanschluss, Vernetzung, Dienstplattform, Systemarchitektur, durchgehende Rekonfigurierbarkeit u.a.) bis zur Entwicklung von Diensten, Anwendungen und Inhalten, wobei zu berücksichtigen ist, dass die zugehörigen Innovationszyklen (Funk, Netze und Dienste) zwar miteinander verknüpft und gegenseitig abhängig sind, jedoch unterschiedlichen Zeitzwängen unterliegen.
