The EU took account of the particular characteristics of the market for antique weapons when it designed legislation to ensure the traceability of arms through their identification and registration by EU Member States. A fundamental element of the law specifically exempts old but fully functional firearms held by collectors and museums from the authenticity marking requirements, if these firearms are already marked with "historic" proof-markings.
