Specifically, EMIR aims to reduce risks to the financial system arising from derivatives transactions by increasing the transparency of the over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives market – a market in which derivative contracts are not traded on an exchange, but privately negotiated between two counterparties.
Mit der EMIR-Verordnung sollen gezielt die Risiken verringert werden, die dem Finanzsystem durch das Derivategeschäft entstehen. Hierzu soll der Markt für sogenannte „OTC-Derivate“ (OTC: over the counter) – also der Markt für Derivatekontrakte, die nicht an einer Börse, sondern privat zwischen zwei Gegenparteien gehandelt werden – transparenter gemacht werden.
