This agreement will in theory ensure that the basic rules of forest conservation, such as sound monitoring by government of timber felling, are respected – and at present, we have to note, the Ghanaian forests are being felled at an annual rate of almost 2%. If this bilateral agreement works, it can bring benefits to both parties. In Ghana, where illegal logging has reduced the rainforest by up to 25% of its original size in under 50 years, the agreement will help to secure the future of its timber industry – its fourth most profitable industry.

Wenn das Abkommen seinen Zweck erfüllt, verspricht es Vorteile für beide Seiten: In Ghana, dessen Regenwaldflächen durch illegalen Holzeinschlag in weniger als 50 Jahren um bis zu 25 % geschrumpft sind, eröffnet es der Holzwirtschaft – dem an den Gewinnen gemessen viertgrößten Wirtschaftszweig des Landes – neue Zukunftsperspektiven.
