However, following the Russian Federation’s illegal annexation of Crimea, the G7 leaders (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission) decided at their meeting on 24 March 2014 in The Hague (Netherlands) to meet in the G7 format instead and to "suspend our participation in the G-8 until Russia changes course and the environment comes back to where the G-8 is able to have a meaningful discussion".
Nach der illegalen Annektierung der Krim durch die Russische Föderation beschlossen jedoch die Staats- und Regierungschefs der G7 (Kanada, Frankreich, Deutschland, Italien, Japan, das Vereinigte Königreich, die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, der Präsident des Europäischen Rates und der Präsident der Europäischen Kommission) in ihrer Sitzung am 24. März 2014 in Den Haag (Niederlande), sich im G 7-Format zu treffen und ihre Teilnahme in der G8 auszusetzen, „bis Russland seinen Kurs ändert und das Umfeld wieder für eine sinnvolle Diskussion der G8 bereit ist“.
