Durch das Auslaufen von Cyanid in die Donau wurde offenkundig, daß verborgene ökologische Bomben den gesamten europäischen Kontinent bedrohen; zudem sagt ein Bericht der Europäischen Umweltagentur voraus, daß in der ersten Dekade des 21. Jahrhunderts die Menge der Abfälle aus Papier, Glas und Plastik um 40% bis 60% und die Emissionen von Cadmium und Quecksilber um 20% bis 30% ansteigen werden und die Abfallbewirtschaftung die Umwelt mit Schwermetallen, Gasen und sonstigen giftigen Substanzen belasten wird, die zum Treibhauseffekt beitragen und für die Luft- und Wasserverschmutzung verantwortlich sind.
