In the context of the Matthaeus programme, Mrs Scrivener, Member of the Commission with responsibility for taxation and customs union, invited 200 senior customs officials and about 20 representatives of European trade-union organisations for customs officers to a two-day meeting with the Commission; with 84 days to go until the internal market came into operation, the meeting provided an opportunity to consider what the abolition of borders between Member States would actually entail.
