Therefore the European Union encourages the government of Burundi to fully implement the new Criminal Code as far as the adoption of the death penalty and the criminalization of torture, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity are concerned; however, the European union calls on the Burundi authorities not to apply the provision criminalising homosexuality, to remove the provision from the law and to bring the Penal Code in line with the international treaties Burundi has signed and ratified.
Daher fordert die Europäische Union die burundische Regierung auf, das neue Strafgesetzbuch vollständig umzusetzen, insoweit es die Abschaffung der Todesstrafe und die Unterstrafestellung von Folter, Völkermord, Kriegsverbrechen und Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit betrifft; die Europäische Union ruft die burundischen Behörden jedoch auf, die Bestimmung, mit der Homosexualität unter Strafe gestellt wird, nicht anzuwenden, sondern vielmehr außer Kraft zu setzen und das Strafgesetzbuch mit den internationalen Verträgen, die Burundi unterzeichnet und ratifiziert hat, in Einklang zu bringen.
