Where environmental legislation is applicable to SMEs, they tend to presume that they are complying and as a result full compliance is often the result of external action after an inspection rather than an on-going process of checking that legal requirements are being met.[8] At the same time, SMEs often do not have the necessary legal and environmental expertise to cope with environmental legislation.
