So far, to ensure inspectors' safety, oil, gas and petrochemical plants have to shut down during inspection operations: vessels have to be decoupled from live sections of the plant (closing a valve is not sufficient); then vessels are extensively cleaned to remove all products that can emit flammable or toxic gases; scaffolding is then erected in larger vessels, so that inspectors can access all necessary areas.

Die Sicherheit der Inspektoren erfordert bislang den Stillstand von Raffinerien oder anderen petrochemischen Anlagen während der Inspektion: Die Behälter müssen von den aktiven Teilen der Anlage getrennt werden (ein Schließen der Ventile reicht nicht aus). Anschließend werden die Behälter umfassend gereinigt, um alle Stoffe zu entfernen, von denen brennbare oder giftige Gase ausgehen können. In größeren Behältern wird dann ein Gerüst errichtet, über das die Inspektoren Zugang zu allen wichtigen Bereichen erhalten.
