Tragic incidents, such as the one in Dover in July 2000 in which 58 Chinese nationals trying to enter illegally into the United Kingdom lost their lives, which are taking place in almost all Member States, point not only to the importance of the fight against the trafficking of human beings, but also to the existence of a demand for clandestine manpower and of the exploitation of such undocumented migrants.
Tragische, beinahe in allen Mitgliedstaaten vorkommende Ereignisse wie jenes in Dover im Juli 2000, als 58 chinesische Staatsbürger bei dem Versuch starben, illegal in das Vereinigte Königreich einzureisen, zeigen nicht nur auf, wie wichtig die Bekämpfung des Menschenhandels ist, sondern auch, dass eine Nachfrage nach illegalen Arbeitskräften besteht, und Einwanderer ohne Aufenthalts- und Arbeitsgenehmigung leicht ausgebeutet werden.
