As for the Enlightenment, I would not conceal from you the concern we felt last month on hearing Chancellor Merkel quote freely from Voltaire in this House but then say to us – not literally, admittedly, but in essence - that there should be no tolerance for the enemies of tolerance - a statement that recalls the words of the French revolutionary Saint-Just, spoken before the revolutionary court that instigated the Terror: ‘no liberty for the enemies of liberty’.
Was die Aufklärung betrifft, so will ich Ihnen nicht verhehlen, welche Besorgnis wir empfanden, als wir hier im vergangenen Monat hörten, wie die Bundeskanzlerin Merkel, nachdem sie ausführlich Voltaire zitiert hatte, uns sagte, zwar nicht wörtlich, aber sinngemäß: keine Toleranz für die Feinde der Toleranz, was uns an die Worte des französischen Revolutionärs Saint-Just vor dem Revolutionstribunal erinnert, das den Terror einführte: „Keine Freiheit für die Feinde der Freiheit“.
