I am glad that it has been spelled out, both here and at the major conference in Bremen, that HIV/AIDS must go to the top of the agenda, for I am firmly persuaded that it is only if the Heads of State or Government make this issue their own that we will, everywhere, and not least in our neighbouring countries, be able to ensure the creation of the infrastructure that is needed if cooperation with civil society and, above all, with sufferers, is to bear fruit, and if the things to which reference has been made are actually to be done.
Ich bin froh, dass hier deutlich geworden ist – auch noch einmal durch die große Konferenz in Bremen –, dass HIV/AIDS Chefsache sein muss. Ich bin fest davon überzeugt: Nur wenn die Staats- und Regierungschefs der Europäischen Union dies zu ihrer eigenen Sache machen, werden wir überall, auch in unseren Nachbarländern, dafür sorgen können, dass die notwendige Infrastruktur aufgebaut wird, um die Zusammenarbeit mit der Zivilgesellschaft und vor allen Dingen auch mit den Betroffenen zu einem fruchtbaren Ergebnis zu führen und die Punkte, die angesprochen worden sind, auch umsetzen zu können.
