Taking into account that cable connections include transoceanic journeys and that the biggest cable-laying vessels can only stock about 3 000 km of cable drums, Alcatel-Lucent is of the opinion that the most significant activity of cable-laying vessels consists of transporting cable drums from the cable drum factory to the point at sea where the cable has to be connected and from which it will be laid down on the sea bed.
Angesichts der Tatsache, dass bei der Kabelverlegung Ozeane überbrückt werden und selbst die größten Kabelverlegungsschiffe nur etwa 3 000 km Kabel an Bord nehmen können, ist Alcatel-Lucent der Ansicht, dass die Haupttätigkeit von Kabelverlegungsschiffen darin besteht, Kabeltrommeln von der Fabrik zu dem Punkt auf See zu befördern, an dem das Kabel anzuschließen und auf dem Meeresgrund zu verlegen ist.
