22. Recalls that forests are important primarily for the production of
wood, but also for maintaining biodiversity, the prevention of fires, floods, avalanches and erosion, management of groundwater resources, landscape management and carbon capture; there is a pressing need for a stringent EU forestry policy, that takes due account of the diversity of European forests and is based on scientific knowledge in order to maintain, protect and adapt forests in the fight against the risks they face; recalls that forests are important primarily for the production of wood but also for maintaining biodiversity, the prevention of fires, floods,

22. weist darauf hin, dass Wälder in erster Linie für die Holzproduktion wichtig sind, aber auch für den Erhalt der Artenvielfalt, die Verhütung von Bränden, Überschwemmungen, Lawinen und Erosion sowie für die Bewirtschaftung der Grundwasserressourcen, die Landschaftspflege und die Kohlenstoffbindung; hält daher eine durchdachte Forstpolitik der EU für dringend geboten, die der Vielfalt der europäischen Wälder gebührend Rechnung trägt und sich in Bezug auf den Erhalt, den Schutz und die Anpassung der Wälder gegenüber bestehenden Risiken auf wissenschaftliche Kenntnisse stützt;
