According to information gathered by the University of Hamburg and published by the German Focus periodical, in one hour of operation the engines of a 50 000-tonne cruiser ship emit into the atmosphere a quantity of suspended particles equivalent to that emitted by 50 000 automobiles travelling at 130 km/h, a quantity of nitrogen monoxide equivalent to that emitted by 45 000 automobiles and a quantity of carbon dioxide equivalent to that emitted by 7000 automobiles.
Nach einer auf Angaben der Universität Hamburg gestützten Veröffentlichung der deutschen Zeitschrift Focus bläst ein Kreuzfahrtschiff mit 50 000 BRT bei laufenden Maschinen jede Stunde so viel Feinstaub in die Atmosphäre wie 50 000 Autos bei Tempo 130 km/h, so viel Stickstoffmonoxid wie 45 000 Autos und so viel Kohlendioxid wie 7000 Autos.
