Und der müssen wir endlich ins Gesicht sehen. Wer heute immer noch glaubt, andere Fragen hätten Vorrang, der versteht die heutige Zeit und ihre Herausforderungen nicht – wir brauchen mehr Wachstum und mehr und bessere Arbeitsplätze – sonst wird das soziale Gesicht Europas ein kaltes und zynisches Gesicht werden, ein Gesicht, dass nicht zu unserer europäischen Lebensvorstellung passt, die auf die geteilte Verantwortung des einzelnen und der Gesellschaft, auf Solidarität, sozialen Ausgleich und soziale Kohäsion setzt.
Anyone who still thinks that other questions are more important has failed to understand the present situation and the challenges it presents: we need more growth and more and better jobs – otherwise the social face of Europe will become a cold, cynical face, and one which does not match our European aspirations to responsibility shared between the individual and society, to solidarity, and to social balance and cohesion.
