Für die Forschung im Kohlesektor hatte die Kommission 1995 21 Mio ECU bewilligt, die gemäß den Leitlinien für technische Forschung in diesem Sektor für 1994-1999 auf 35 Projekte verteilt wurden. Diese Projekte lagen überwiegend im Bereich der Bergbautechnologie und betrafen insbesondere Stollenausbau und - belüftung, Fernsteuerung und Telematik, Wiederverwendung von Produkten bei der Vorbereitung, Instandhaltung, Verkokung und Abfallbewirtschaftung.
