20. Calls on the Commission to integrate soil protection into the Community's environmental measures; once again draws attention to the final outcome of any soil degradation, namely desertification, which is affecting large parts of the Union and has obvious effects in terms of poverty, loss of biodiversity, water quality and climate change; recalls the vital role of forests in soil fixation, avoidance of erosion, CO2 absorption and flood prevention;
20. fordert die Kommission auf, den Bodenschutz in die Umweltvorschriften der Gemeinschaft einzubeziehen; weist erneut darauf hin, dass der Prozess der Bodenverschlechterung in weiten Gebieten der Union in seiner Endphase, nämlich der Wüstenbildung, angelangt ist, deren Folgen, Armut, Verlust der Artenvielfalt und der Wasserqualität, sowie Klimawandel offenkundig sind; weist noch einmal darauf hin, dass Wälder für den Bodenrückhalt, zur Verhütung von Erosion, zur Bindung von Kohlendioxid und zur Verhütung von Überschwemmungen eine fundamentale Rolle spielen;
