In the EU shale gas and shale oil extraction is governed by the same principles which apply to other types of extraction such as of coal, conventional gas and oil, of water and geothermal energy, and to underground activities such as injection of CO2 for gas and oil recovery, storage of gas and oil reserves and storage of CO2 for carbon capture and storage (CCS) purposes.
Die Förderung von Schiefergasen und -ölen unterliegt in der EU den gleichen Prinzipien, die auch auf andere Förderungsarten wie den Abbau von Kohle, die konventionelle Förderung von Gas und Öl, die Wasserentnahme, die Produktion geothermischer Energie sowie auf Aktivitäten im Untergrund, wie die Einleitung von CO2 zur Gewinnung von Gas und Öl, die Lagerung von Gas- und Ölreserven sowie die Lagerung von CO2 zum Zweck der CO2-Abtrennung und -Speicherung (CCS) anwendbar sind.
