– Mr President, if there is one thing I have learnt about constituency problems since I was elected to the House, it is how very variable throughout Europe is the interpretation of Articles 5 and 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights – the right to brief detention before trial and the right to a speedy trial, the right to be released pending trial if the trial cannot proceed speedily.
– (EN) Herr Präsident! Wenn ich im Zusammenhang mit Problemen des Wahlkreises seit meiner Wahl in das Parlament eines gelernt habe, dann ist es das, wie unterschiedlich überall in Europa Artikel 5 und 6 der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention ausgelegt werden. Es geht da um das Recht in Bezug auf die Untersuchungshaft vor dem Gerichtsverfahren und um das Recht auf ein rasches Verfahren, das Recht, in Erwartung des Verfahrens auf freien Fuß gesetzt zu werden, sofern das Verfahren nicht schnell eingeleitet werden kann.
